The European patient organisations working on heart valve disease have decided to join forces in order to speak up for heart valve disease patients across Europe. The patient groups have formalized their collaboration as part of the Global Heart Hub  and together form the Heart Valve Disease Patient Council.

The European flagship event is the Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week, which was held for the first time on 8th September 2018 and aims to improve diagnosis, treatment and management of heart valve disease in Europe. Going forwards, the European Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week will be held every year during the third week of September.

The initiative to create the first European Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week follows the example of the US, where the first awareness day was introduced on the 22 February 2017 by the Alliance for Ageing Research. Following the success of the 2018 European Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day, the European Heart Valve Disease Alliance will be introducing the very first European Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week for 2019.

The European Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week will be held during the third week of September 2019 and aims to increase awareness and improve diagnosis, treatment and management of heart valve disease in Europe.
